Arizona has to back up
Fri, September 3, 2010WASHINGTON
The US Justice Department has filled already his third suit against Arizona officials this month. The last one is against the "toughest sheriff" in country Joe Arpaio. And also the third suit is about immigration.
The government first sued Arizona in order to block the state's new immigration law that permits officers to question people about their immigration status and request personal documents. Than the government sued Maricopa County's community college system for alleged employment discrimination against Hispanic employees. And now the Justice department is stating, that the sweeps of sheriff Arpaio against the illegal immigrants are discriminatory.
All these accusations seem not to bother Arizona officials too much., The officials in this state are sure, that their actions will ensure them the votes of Arizona citizens in the elections- and even if these actions are again the federal law, they will profit from them politically. That is the reason, why all three suits against officials in Arizona should be brought up to the bitter end. Bitter for the people, who are acting against the federal law and are connecting their success in state elections with breaking the law.
If these officials and their lawless actions would be allowed this would result in similar problems in other states. In addition, state officials in other US states could follow their example- it is nothing easier than to be tough against immigrants. They do not know about their rights, they are the weakest social component, they use not to sue anybody in US for breaking their human rights. It is good, that the federal government picked up their cause. Lawlessness and coward actions against immigrants have to be sued. Arizona has to back up.
