Terrible floods ravaged Romania over the last three weeks. Hydrologists warn that it is not over yet. The flood alert is being kept in effect in the eastern part of the country for a yet uncertain period. It seems to be a difficult time - Romanian citizens have not only to overcome economic impediments, they also have to fight against the unleashed forces of nature.Damages caused by floods over the past weeks have risen to almost 400 million Euros, according to data sent to the Government by local authorities. The news agency Mediafax mentioned the need of rebuilding 1000 homes which collapsed or are close to collapse. Another 6000 have been affected and need intervention. 23 people have lost their lives as a direct consequence of the major floods.

According to Mediafax.ro, the Romanian Prime Minister, Emil Boc, said the Government will provide construction materials. However, local authorities must strictly monitor the issuing of new building authorizations and make sure new homes are built in non-floodable areas.

Considering the given situation, politicians take into account the possibility of a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund. According to Mediafax, the Romanian PM wants to make a decision regarding a new deficit target after the completion af all damage assessments.

Romania might also ask the IMF to allow a wider budget gap than the agreed 6.8% of GDP, citing force majeure following the floods that affected the country, said Transport Minister, Radu Berceanu, according to the news agency Mediafax.
